This Garlic Knots Recipe are homemade rolls, twisted and slathered in garlic butter, herbs, and cheese, just like at your favorite pizzeria! The perfect side dish for pizza or pasta night!
I am 100% a bread lover. When we go out to eat, I have to force myself to only eat a couple of slices or rolls before the meal. Especially when it comes to Garlic Knots.
Oh boy, you know the ones, warm right from the oven and slathered in garlic butter, topped with parmesan cheese. Those are my absolute favorite and we can’t get enough.
That is why we make them at home so even though I know I need to limit myself, we can make this recipe anytime we want and serve it with all our favorite meals.
Dare I say they are even better than your local pizza joint? A little time-consuming but well worth the end result! I promise you, once you eat one right out of the oven you will know what I’m talking about.
This Garlic Knot Recipe has been one of my favorites for many years and we have not strayed from this recipe because it is just that good. Fluffy, garlicky, buttery, and absolutely perfect.
When it comes to pasta and pizza night, this is our go-to side to serve along with them. They go hand in hand with one another and any excuse I get to make them I do.
Some of our other favorite bread recipes we have on our site include: Garlic Cheese Muffins, Crostini and Cheese Stuffed Breadsticks.
WHY THIS RECIPE WORKS:
- Completely homemade, you can guarantee there are no shortcuts taken with the flavor.

- These make just the right amount but if you are serving a large crowd feel free to double.

Unsalted butter
Garlic
Parmigiano Reggiano cheese
Parsley
Basil
Marinara sauce, optional
HOW TO MAKE A GARLIC KNOTS RECIPE:
Pizza Dough:
- In a large bowl, add in warm water, honey, yeast, and 1 tablespoon of the olive oil. Stir to combine and let sit for 5 minutes, until foamy.
- Add in 2 cups of the flour and the salt, mix to combine by hand or with a wooden spoon until smooth. Start adding in the additional flour, 1/4 cup at a time, you may not use all the flour, until the dough is formed and smooth but still slightly tacky.
- On a clean, lightly floured work surface, place the dough and knead by hand for 3-5 minutes, until a dough ball is better formed, it should still be slightly tacky.
- In a large bowl, place another 1 Tablespoon of the olive oil, and place the dough ball into the bowl and roll it around in the oil. Place plastic wrap on top and sit in a warm spot until the dough has doubled in size, about 1 1/2 hours.
Garlic Knot Assembly:
- Place the risen dough on a lightly floured surface. With a lightly floured rolling pin, roll out the dough into a rough 12×16 inch rectangle. Brush with the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil.
- Using a pizza dough cutter or knife, cut the dough in half lengthwise and then cut 1-inch strips crosswise. You will end up with 16 even strips.
- Line two baking sheets with parchment paper. Loosely tie each strip of dough into a knot and lay them on a baking sheet, 2 inches apart. Repeat with the other pieces. Sprinkle with kosher salt and cover with plastic wrap or a clean kitchen towel and let rise again for 30 minutes.
- While the dough is rising, preheat the oven to 375°F degrees. Bake the knots for 18-20 minutes until light golden brown. Set aside to cool and prepare the garlic butter.
Garlic Butter and Toppings:
- Place butter in a small saucepan over low heat. Let melt and add in garlic. Cook until fragrant, stirring constantly about 1-2 minutes, do not allow it to brown. Take off heat.
- Place the knots in a large bowl. Add in garlic butter, parmesan, and fresh herbs, toss to coat. Serve with more cheese sprinkled on top and marinara sauce if desired, enjoy!
HOW DO I SHAPE GARLIC KNOTS?
The best way to shape your Garlic Knots Recipe is after you cut them, gently pull them out slightly so you have a little slack.
You will then proceed to literally just tie them into a knot and then place the end side down on the prepared baking sheet so it bakes flush with the knots themselves.
WHAT CAN I SERVE WITH THIS GARLIC KNOTS RECIPE?
We like to serve these with a variety of things, but mostly there are certain dishes that we feel like they go with the best, some of our favorites include:
There are so many other dishes that these will go great with, these are just some of the common ones that we use!
CAN I USE STORE BOUGHT PIZZA DOUGH?
Yes, you can. If you want to take a shortcut the best pizza dough to use is the ones that come in the bags. They are the ones that the store uses that use yeast.
In a rush I will use the canned pizza dough, they do not taste the same, so if you can get the pizza dough that comes in the bags that say homemade that is best.
HOW TO STORE:
This Garlic Knots Recipe can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3-4 days. If you want to reheat them just pop them in the microwave for 15-20 seconds.
These can also be frozen, let the knots cool completely then place in a freezer container or bag. They will keep in the freezer for up to 2 months.
Let defrost on the countertop overnight. To reheat place in the microwave for about 15-20 seconds until warm.
TIPS AND TRICKS:
- Make sure you are using the right yeast, we use active dry yeast for these.
- Serve with your favorite dipping sauce, we love marinara but alfredo is great as well.
- These can be frozen, see my tips above.
- You can easily double this recipe to serve more people or keep for later.
- Make sure you toss the knots in the butter mixture while still warm so everything sticks and can soak in!
- You can use store-bought dough, see my recommendations above.
If you want that perfect side dish that goes will pretty much all of your favorite things then you have to make this Garlic Knots Recipe!

The bread looks wonderful, but, I wanted to say how sorry I am to hear about the passing of your Lulu. Nothing makes the time pass faster,or the tears dry from our eyes. But, sharing the wonderful memories of that precious pet does make us smile more. And Lulu will be waiting for you at the Rainbow Bridge, young and healthy and full of life.
