So, a few days ago I was in a pickle. Hubby requested that I make him Bar-B-Que chicken and as often as I can I will definitely follow through with his requests. On this occasion it was a no brainier. So, I got to making everything, had the chicken in the oven (the grill has been permanently locked away since Jeremy got his new toy, more on that later) was getting the sides taken care of when it was time to start basting the chicken. I go into the fridge and reach for my trusty Sweet Baby Ray’s sauce and BAM it had disappeared. I was sure of it. I even looked to check in the pantry if I had placed in there (Sometimes I have brain farts, aight? Like the time I accidentally placed a bag of frozen veggies in the cabinet under the sink… 2 weeks later.. “What IS that smell?!”) on accident or if we had another bottle to open up…NOPE. So, of course, I went into a complete panic.. I had promised BBQ chicken and now I would have the break the news to him that he wouldn’t get what he was craving. So it dawned on me, make it yourself! DUH! And, here I have what I found, a great recipe! I don’t think I’ll have to buy that bottle stuff anymore!
SO, I went searching for a recipe on this new flanged thing they call a computer and found a little recipe. I stumbled upon the recipe (and now one of my favorite blogs) over at Simply Scratch and she describes it as tasting just like Sweet Baby Ray’s so of course I had to try this one out! Here’s the ingredients:
1 1/2 C Brown Sugar
1 1/4 C Ketchup
1/2 C White Vinegar
1/2 C Water
2 1/2 tsp Ground Mustard
2 tsp Paprika
1 1/2 tsp Kosher Salt
1 tsp Pepper
In her recipe all you need to do is combine all the ingredients until there are no lumps and that’s it! And, you can stop there if you’d like but I thought it was a little loose. So, I placed the mixture into a sauce pan and let it simmer until it was the consistency I wanted. I think this really helped to melt the sugar and combine better.
I used it that night on the chicken and it was great! I also used it on my Baked BBQ Wings as well, and they were better than ever!
SOOO YUM!

Funny, I found myself in the exact same situation and found the exact same recipe just last night! I heavily altered it because I didn’t have enough of all the ingredients on hand, but it still turned out really good.
