Using this fast and easy tutorial for DIY canvas art with Sharpies will help customize your decor in no time!

I have been OBSESSED lately with these deer head, or stag head silhouettes! I just knew I wanted a craft that I could make for the holidays involving this cute design. That’s when I thought of doing a simple canvas craft and the easiest way for me to make the design really pop was to use these metallic Sharpie’s I found while shopping at Staples. I think it came out great and of course, wanted to share it with all of you!

What is really great about this craft is it’s super inexpensive to make. I picked up the canvas on sale at a craft store in a two pack that was around $4 and I bought the Sharpies at Staples where they are having an amazing sale right now. I purchased a 12 count assorted colors pack for $6, a 4 count assorted metallic pack and a metallic gold 4 pack were both 50% off making them $3.49!

So, I took all my supplies home to get crafting!

Supplies

1 Canvas

1 Graphic to trace (I got my graphic from We Lived Happily Ever After)

Pencil

4 pack assorted metallic Sharpies

Scissors

Tape

Step by Step Directions

Lightly trace around the cut out with a pencil and remove cut out. I had to add the tips of the antlers.

Fill in with the gold metallic Sharpie.

I then went back in with the bronze colored metallic Sharpie to give it more definition, like in the graphic.

Get something small to trace (I used a prescription medicine bottle) and trace a polka dot pattern for the background. This doesn’t have to be perfect, I love the rustic look!

Fill in all the polka dots with the silver metallic Sharpie. Place or hang where you wish and enjoy!!

See how easy that was? I think it is super cute and fun!! You could easily do tons of different DIY canvas art with these sharpies and this technique! I’m planning on doing another one with a line from my favorite Christmas song next!

This is such a super idea! Do you think adding a layer of gesso or primer is necessary? I always hate that step and seems like you skipped it and it came out just fine. I will have to do this with the 3 blank canvases sitting in my craft closet!

I just went straight on the canvas! I’ve never worked with it before and just used the sharpies right on it. No bleeding at all! P.S. I’d love to see your finished projects!!

    Dana,
I love this idea. I have been wanting to make one similar to this one but with glitter. I think I like your better. I already have the sharpies and the canvas so I guess the next step is to get to work. 🙂
